What Every Parent Needs to Know Before Their Teen’s Senior Session

As a senior photographer in Albuquerque, I know how important it is for parents to feel confident when planning their teen’s portrait session. After all, this isn’t just a photo shoot—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience celebrating your child’s final year of high school.

Whether you’re in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, or planning a more adventurous shoot in Jemez, New Mexico here are a few things every parent should know before their teen steps in front of the camera.

1. Trust the Process

This gorgeous session with a senior from Eldorado High School took place in the lush green beauty of Jemez, New Mexico. With tall grass, flowing river , and warm sunlight filtering through the trees, it was the perfect location to let creativity shine.

One of the standout moments? She laid down in the river, surrounded by floating flowers she brought, trusting my vision even though the water was freezing. That trust paid off—those images were absolute magic.

Parents, when you encourage your teen to go with the flow and try something a little outside their comfort zone, it can lead to the most unforgettable shots.

2. Help Them Feel Prepared—Not Pressured

Before the session, I’ll guide you and your teen through what to wear, what to bring, and how to prep. But the most important thing you can do is encourage them to be themselves and to read through everything I send them. This senior brought along a mirror and a bouquet of fresh flowers as props she felt connected to and inspired by. That made the session even more personal and meaningful.

Let your teen get creative. Support their vision, and I’ll help bring it to life.

3. These Sessions Are Meant to Celebrate Them

Senior portraits are more than just yearbook photos—they’re a celebration of who your teen is right now. They’re growing, changing, becoming their own person—and these images are a way to freeze that in time.

At this Jemez session, we captured her confidence, her creativity, and her willingness to trust the moment. She left the session feeling empowered, and her family was thrilled with how the images reflected her true personality.

4. Location Makes a Big Difference

While many of my sessions take place in Albuquerque, I love when families want to venture out to special places like the Jemez mountains. With its rich greens, tall grasses, and peaceful rivers, it adds something magical and unique to a senior session.

If you’re open to adventure, we can plan something that feels like a true experience—not just a photo shoot.

Let’s Make It Easy & Fun
