Avoid these at ALL Risks!
Your senior session is one of the most exciting parts of your last year of high school! But let’s be honest prepping for it can feel overwhelming. 😅 You want your photos to reflect your personality, your style, and this once-in-a-lifetime season but where do you start?
After photographing seniors all over New Mexico for nearly a decade, I’ve seen what works and what causes stress. So today I’m breaking down the top 5 mistakes to avoid when prepping for your senior session and what to do instead!
1. Waiting Too Long to Book Your Session
One of the biggest mistakes seniors make? Booking too late — especially if you want fall colors, sunflower fields, or weekend availability.
📅 What to do instead: Book early (months in advance if possible!) so you get the date, location, and season you want. Plus, early booking means more time to prep outfits, hair, and makeup.
2. Wearing Something You’re Not Comfortable In
It doesn’t matter how trendy or “Pinterest-worthy” your outfit is — if you’re constantly adjusting it or feel awkward, it’ll show in your photos.
👗 What to do instead: Choose outfits that you love and feel great in. Think flattering fits, soft fabrics, and styles that match your vibe. I always send a senior style guide to help you plan!
3. Not Thinking Through Hair & Makeup
This is one of the easiest ways to elevate your look, yet it’s often an afterthought. Frizzy hair, unblended makeup, or skipped mascara can dull your natural glow on camera.
💄 What to do instead:
- Take advantage of the professional hair and makeup that we offer (bonus: it’s fun + relaxing!).
- If you’re doing your own, give yourself plenty of time and use products you trust.
- Avoid trying anything totally new the night before your session!
4. Skipping the Details
You’d be surprised how many seniors forget the little things — chipped nails, visible bra straps, or scuffed shoes can all distract from your final images.
📝 What to do instead:
- Check your nails (natural or neutral polish works great!)
- Plan the right undergarments for each outfit
- Clean your shoes and bring extras if needed
- Bring touch-up essentials (lip gloss, powder, hairbrush, etc.)
5. Overthinking or Over-Scripting Your Session
Yes, it’s good to prep — but don’t overthink it to the point that you feel stiff or nervous. Trust me, you don’t need to memorize poses or rehearse your smile!
📸 What to do instead: Come relaxed and ready to have fun. I’ll guide you the whole time with easy, natural posing — no awkward modeling required. My job is to make you feel confident and look amazing!
Bonus: Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me! 👋)
Your senior photos should be fun, stress-free, and uniquely you. When you book with me, I help you plan every step from what to wear to where we shoot. My goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, confident, and seen.
